Mitchell fifth graders are involved in a collaborative, online math project with classes all across the world. We have participated in the "Where's the Cookie" Voice Thread project in which we have been able to research famous landmarks all over the world to find out "where the cookie is." We also walked across the street to Noccalula Falls to share with other students our famous Gadsden landmark. Students will also be creating graphs online of our students favorite Oreo cookie and making estimations and stacking Oreo cookies with students in Kansas, Indiana, and Georgia.

Character Traits in Olympic Athletes

For the month of January, leading up to the start of the Winter Olympics in February, we are going to be learning what characteristics Olympic athletes possess that help them excel in sports. These character traits also apply to school and everyday life. Each week we will hear from different Olympic athletes about fair play, perserverance, respect, and sportsmanship. My hope is that Mitchell students will use what they learn from these athletes to excel themselves!

365 Photo Challenge

Deciding late this first night of January 2010, to participate with my children in the 365 Photo Challenge. The idea of the challenge is to post a photo every day this year. I hope I will be able to follow through with this project until December 31, 2010. Wish me luck! I am enlisting the help of my three beautiful children for several reasons - first and foremost, to make me accountable to completing the project, secondly, they LOVE to take pictures of everyday things, and third, to teach them a little bit about photography (even though I don't know much myself about photography!). Please check back with us often to see how we are coming along with the project. Happy New Year!

P.S. Let me explain my photo, since it was dark and VERY cold, there wasn't much to photograph. I decided we could document the changing of the seasons in the South by periodically photographing this tree in our front yard. In the Spring it will be a beautiful dogwood for Easter.

"Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" Project

Students from Mrs. Roberts' third grade class Skyped with Ms. Leon's third grade students from Sandoval School in Chicago, IL. The students read simultaneously an excerpt from the book "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs." The students have worked collaboratively with students across the world observing weather patterns and comparing and contrasting the book with the "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs" movie trailer.

The students will also be going to see the movie next week at the theater.

Mrs. Rogers' first grade students "audition" each Friday to see who the next "First Grade Idol" will be. This activity motivates students to practice their reading fluency passages each day so that on Friday they will be crowned "Top Idol!" Mrs. Rogers and her students used Skype to call in to the computer lab for me to judge the groups. This an a fun example I made for everyone to think about until the first day of school. I will give you a hint if you are having trouble guessing the answer to this Wordle, "this has been in the news a lot this summer." You will also be making your own Wordles this year with news events, vocabulary words, literature, etc.

The AETC Podcasts you are hearing on the Gcast player were recorded by particpants in the 21st Century Classroom Project Mrs. A. Rogers, Mrs. L. Rogers, and myself presented at the Alabama Educational Technology Conference in June. The participants were participating in a fluency excercise were they listened to the music and lyrics to the song "The Ants Go Marching." After some fluency practice, they recorded themselves singing the song on the iPod. They all had a GREAT time! Thanks Mrs. A. Rogers for uploading those podcasts!

Recycling Campaign

I would like to say, "THANK YOU," to everyone who has participated in any of our recycling contests this year. We have had a very successful recycling year raising over $350 for our school and helping the environment. In our most recent contest, the cell phone drive, we recycled 56 phones. Mrs. Rogers' and Mrs. Mayes' classes collected the most phones. Mrs. Mayes' class won the contest for the second semester, earning 106 points. Thanks again for helping our school and the environment.

Lunar Eclipse

Sky-gazers witnessed the total lunar eclipse on Thursday. In India it was visible partially in some parts in the early hours.

The total lunar eclipse was also visible from Arctic, Western Asia, Arabia, most of Africa, Europe and Americas.

The year 2008 will have two eclipses -- a total lunar eclipse on February 21 and a total solar eclipse on August 1.

The next total lunar eclipse will be on December 21, 2010.

Our Super Recycling Contest ended Friday. I am proud to announce that our Top Recycler for the 4 week contest period was Chance B. Chance recycled 11 items! Chance chose the Sony PSP for his prize. Cyber Security Awaareness Week was a great success this year. We found out lots of information on how to be safe on the internet. Kindergarten and first grade classes made headbands and stick puppets with their internet friend iBuddy. We also sang internet safety songs with iBuddy and made internet safety posters. Fourth and fifth grade classes participated in a cyber safety webcast sponsored by Kids Safe Online and the National Webcast Initiative until our live feed died. Maybe we will have better luck next year! We featured public service announcements and FBI internet safety tips from the iSAFE website during the morning announcements each day last week. If you would like to listen to any of those daily podcasts they are available at gcast or in itunes.

Do Schools Kill Creativity?

I read an article on one of the blogs today. It made me stop and think about our current educational system. It made me think about all the children I've taught in the past. I'm afraid I may have stifled their creativity. It wasn't done on purpose, I thought I was doing the right thing at the time, but now I've had a shift in thinking. I apologize to all those students who wanted to draw in second grade and I wouldn't let them because I thought they were not making good use of their time because they were not on task in the classroom. I hope you enjoyed the voice thread presentation I made from my trip to Atlanta. Mrs. Rogers, Mrs. Wills, and Dr. Berry and myself had a GREAT time and learned a lot that we will be sharing with you in about a month! I am SO excited about the new school year. I have LOTS of information and technology to share with you!

One thing I am REALLY excited about is the acquisition of 10 Apple computers that will be housed in the computer lab and library for student use. We are going to make some great technology projects this year with these computers!
